About the Program

A career that starts with knowing your community.

Community Health Workers are the trusted link between healthcare providers and the people they serve. CHWs help neighbors navigate clinics, understand chronic conditions, access resources, and advocate for themselves. This certification opens the door to a meaningful healthcare career — no medical background required.

Curriculum

The course covers everything required for official Community Health Worker certification in Texas.

01

Communication

Listening with purpose, explaining health information clearly, and meeting people exactly where they are.

03

Connecting people to the right care, food, housing, and social services without losing them in the gap.

04

Capacity Building

Helping individuals and families build the skills, confidence, and resources to advocate for themselves.

05

Advocacy Skills

Speaking up for patients and communities — within clinics, with insurers, and in public conversations.

06

Sharing health knowledge in language that lands — at the kitchen table, in a clinic room, in a group setting.

07

Managing your caseload, your time, and your documentation so nothing falls through the cracks.

08

Common Questions

Questions before you apply

Do I need any healthcare background to apply?

No. The program is designed for people who are new to healthcare. What we look for is a commitment to your community and the time to complete the 9 weeks.

What can I do with this certification?

Texas-certified Community Health Workers work in clinics, hospitals, community-based organizations, schools, and faith-based programs. Many start as outreach workers or care coordinators and grow from there.

What if I miss a class?

Attendance matters — certification requires completing the full curriculum. If you know in advance you’ll need to miss one or two sessions, mention it on the application and we’ll figure out a plan together.

Is the $800 tuition refundable?

We understand life happens. Reach out before class starts if your situation changes and we’ll work with you.

Will I get a certificate when I finish?

Yes. Graduates receive a certificate of completion that documents the 8 core competency areas required for Texas CHW certification.

Who runs this program?

The program is offered by Foremost Family Health Centers in partnership with Texas DFW AHEC East. Instruction is delivered by Mary Montez, a certified CHW Instructor.
